One of the difficult tasks of moving is to solve the problem of whether it is possible to transport the refrigerator lying down. Despite its impressive size, this is a very vulnerable device.
When a new thing is purchased, such a difficulty does not arise for future owners, because trading companies themselves deliver bulky household appliances. This is done by specially trained employees who know: how to take the equipment correctly; how to carry it along the flights of stairs, so as not to drop or hit; how to bring it into an apartment and turn around with a bulky thing in a narrow corridor.
In addition, all equipment is rigidly fixed in the package using foam pads, and the transport used for transportation is equipped with appropriate fasteners that fix the boxes.
During the move, many owners have to decide on their own how to properly transport a refrigerator, because not everyone has the opportunity to use the services of professional movers and an equipped car.
Preparation of equipment for transportation
The refrigerator can only be transported if it is properly prepared. A number of successive simple measures will allow transportation, keeping the equipment in excellent condition:
- The refrigerator is de-energized and completely unloaded, pulling out not only food, but also all shelves and drawers.
- After defrosting, the internal chambers are wiped dry.
- The internal equipment is packed separately, shifting with paper. Particularly careful handling requires glass shelves, for which soft shock-absorbing pads are used.
- The doors of all refrigerator chambers are closed and securely fixed with twine or tape, each in at least 2 places.
- Outside, it is better to cover the device with foam or cardboard, which is fixed with tape or twine, protecting the surface from scratches. If it was not possible to find wrapping material for the entire surface of the device, at least the outer corners must be protected.
General rules of transportation
Manufacturers unequivocally state that the refrigerator in the car should stand, and not lie. Transportation of the refrigerator lying down is not recommended for reasons related to the design of the compressor, which contains oil that can leak into the heat exchanger when the refrigerator is transported in a lying position. In a car van, the device is installed vertically, fixed with fasteners and spacers so that it does not fall during sudden braking.
Otherwise, instead of a food cooler, a non-functioning box can be brought to the destination.
But it doesn’t always work out the way the rules require. The main problem that owners of modern equipment face is a bulky device with a height of more than 2 m and a low car van, in which it will not be possible to transport a refrigerator standing up with all the desire. This is where the question arises – how to transport the refrigerator in a horizontal position, if it doesn’t work out differently? To resolve this issue, you should study the relevant recommendations that still exist for such cases. When there is no other choice, and the refrigerator will have to be put down.
How to transport a refrigerator on its side
There is an opinion that it is absolutely impossible to transport a refrigerator lying down. This is not entirely true. Transporting the device in this position requires more attention and compliance with certain rules, but in principle it is possible.
Transportation of a new refrigerator in a box
There are situations when it is easier and cheaper to bring a newly bought refrigerator home on your own, rather than using the store’s branded delivery. There shouldn’t be any difficulties here. The refrigerator will already be packed in a shipping container, and there is no need to wrap it additionally. The box usually has a marking indicating how, on which side you can put the refrigerator.
Important! Some manufacturers and stores will void warranty obligations if the refrigerator was transported without standing. In order not to lose the warranty, it is better to clarify this issue in advance.
Moving with an old refrigerator
If there is a need to transport the refrigerator lying down, without a branded box on which everything is painted, then place the device as follows: on its side (not on the door or rear grille) so that the coolant tube exiting the compressor looks up.
With this arrangement, the oil will drain into the return part of the circuit, and after the unit is installed vertically, it will drain back into the compressor. If it leaks out in the direction of the refrigerant, then after turning on the compressor it will be pushed even further and clog the capillary tube. In this case, the piston system of the motor will have to work with considerable effort, which will sooner or later lead to breakdown.
It is necessary to assess the situation, to determine where and where the coolant is moving from, while the refrigerator is standing still.
Determine the outlet of the cooling tube from the compressor
Any refrigerator works on the same principle: the refrigerant (in a gaseous state) is pumped by the engine towards the condenser, where it gives off the heat taken in the cooled chamber and turns into a liquid. To understand through which tube the freon goes from the motor to the condenser, you can do this: in the process of operation (that is, in the process of movement of gas and liquid), the refrigerator must touch the pipes coming from the compressor. A tube with a higher temperature (hot) leaves the compressor and goes to the condenser. This is what you were looking for. Names it should be directed upwards at the time of moving the refrigerator in the “lying” position.
If all tubes are located on the same side of the motor and have the same direction in the first turn, then during transportation they will both look up. This simplifies the task, you do not need to recognize anything.
Important! In working condition, this tube can reach very high temperatures. In order not to get burns, you need to try the parts of the device very carefully.
Is it possible to transport the refrigerator lying on the back wall or door
By default, for all models of refrigerators it is impossible to transport them on the door or back wall. In some models, technically provided for the possibility of transportation on the rear panel. This is usually indicated in the user manual and on the branded box. If there is no such information in the instructions, then it is better not to risk it. The refrigerator is heavy, and protective barriers, thermal insulation can simply be washed under its weight.
Important! Refrigerators cannot be transported on the door. It will not withstand the load, as it is not designed to work with a lot of weight, and will break.
How soon after moving can the refrigerator be turned on
After the refrigerator has been in a horizontal position, it needs to stand for a while before starting work. The oil should flow back into the motor under the force of gravity. It usually takes few hours. But depending on the surrounding circumstances, it can last up to a day. It is better not to take risks and count the time with a margin.
How to transport a refrigerator in winter
In cold weather, the viscosity of the oil increases. It will take more time before the refrigerator can be turned on. The oil should warm up, fluidity will return to it, after which it will go back to the compressor, and only then can the device be safely started. Usually all this takes about a day. Accordingly, after moving in the winter, the refrigerator should stand for at least a day, only after that you can turn it on.
