In the recent past, the owners of apartments did not face the question of which stove for the house is better – gas or electric. The choice was based on connection options, as some multi-storey buildings had gas supply, while others could only install an electric stove. But modern technical capabilities give freedom of choice to the user, because many people build their own private houses, so already at the design stage, the owners have to choose what is better to install: gas or electric stove. Before choosing your unique option, it is worth understanding the features of each model.

Selection principles

When determining the type of stove for your home, you should not be based only on personal preferences, it is important to take into account a huge number of criteria. The most significant are:

  • safety;
  • cooking speed;
  • functionality;
  • oven options;
  • outward attraction.

It should be noted that with regard to appearance there is no specific answer which of the stoves, electric or gas, will be more attractive. The manufacturer today is trying to take into account all the wishes of the user, therefore, those and other models are represented by a wide range, among which it is not difficult to choose the option to taste. Also, some people buy what is cheaper and will not pay too much attention to the appearance or functionality. And for others, it is more important to buy the device that will be more economical to use.

Features of gas appliances

Gas stoves have been known for a long time, they are in almost every home. When cooking, they use an open fire. The operation of a gas stove is based on the use of gas. The burners ignite very quickly, while allowing for uniform heating, and if necessary, speed up the cooking process by increasing the temperature. The big advantage of the devices is the lack of restrictions in the utensils used.

But the gas device, in comparison with other models powered by the electrical network, has a low fire and explosion safety. Therefore, most modern new buildings are provided with more high-quality wiringto be able to use powerful electrical appliances.

Modern gas stoves have a number of advantages:

  1. Cooking speed, since the temperature of an open flame is higher than that of electric burners.
  2. Lower price compared to mains powered models with the same functionality.
  3. Simplicity and convenience of operation. On gas, thanks to convenient temperature control, it is much easier to cook.

The manufacturer equips a modern gas stove with various good additional features, which make operation very comfortable:

Features of electrical models

Despite the functionality and reliability of modern gas equipment, electric stoves are increasingly replacing these devices. They are characterized more security and functionalityand to all this they have an attractive appearance.

It is worth remembering that their installation is possible in houses with good and high-quality electrical wiring, as they have high power. If the room is not properly equipped, then there is a high probability of fire.

Among the main advantages of an electric stove, the following factors should be highlighted.

  1. High degree of security. The lack of electricity will not lead to big problems, compared to a gas leak: the device simply does not work in such cases.
  2. Environmental safety and cleanliness. As a result of work, no combustion products are released into the air.
  3. High functionality. Modern electric stoves have many additional options, which makes the cooking process very convenient and simple.
  4. Particularly user-friendly electric ovensas they allow you to set the required temperature as clearly as possible, but you will not be able to save money with them.

But there are also disadvantages of such devices, and for some they are quite serious:

  1. High price.
  2. Heating takes place according to the set values. It will not be possible to quickly change the temperature regime; it takes time to obtain the desired indicators.
  3. Since the hotplates take longer to heat up, it takes a little more cooking time.
  4. The cost of electricity today is higher than gas, so during operation, the electric stove will require large financial costs.

Comparison of gas and electric stoves by parameters

Each device has its pros and cons. A comparative analysis of key parameters will help you choose the best option.

In gas stoves, control is traditionally carried out rotary controls. New models are sometimes equipped with a push-button control option, but experience shows that mechanics are more convenient. In older models, the control panel was located exclusively in front. Now there are many models with a sidebar.

Modern gas surfaces often have side control

A greater variety can be observed in electric stoves. There are stoves both with mechanical regulators, and with push-button control. Rotary switches are often found on simple, inexpensive models, but are also found in luxury options, stylized as “retro”. Touch control allows you to organize the adjustment of many parameters with just a few buttons. Touch panels are compact, usually hidden in glass ceramics. It is convenient when using and during cleaning.

The gas stove is a source of increased danger. Even the most advanced gas-controlled stoves need to be regularly checked for leaks (including internal connections). The fire itself can also be a source of problems. They can get burned, it can spread to surrounding objects. Therefore, the operation of a gas stove requires strict adherence to safety rules, extreme caution and attention.

gas control

The gas control function ensures the safe operation of the gas stove

If the budget allows, it is better to look at those stove models where there is gas control both at the top and in the oven. This is a safety option: if for some reason the fire disappears unauthorized (it is blown out by a draft or in the event of a short-term interruption in the gas supply), the automation itself will shut off the gas and stop its supply to the burner.

Electric stoves against this background seem absolutely safe. It uses sensors that monitor the safety of operation (from overheating, overfilling, etc.), indicators that warn the user about the possibility of getting burned, timers and safety interlocks.

Important! In order for the operation of the electric stove to be really safe, at the very beginning you need to take care of its correct connection: the network and socket must be designed for the maximum power of the stove.

Stove care

Washing a gas stove is a whole story. It is necessary to remove the grates, burner covers, sometimes switches. Rinse, dry, put everything back together. A huge number of irregularities and grooves complicates the task. Open fire smokes surfaces. Cast iron grates become sticky from grease getting on them. You can wash them only with strong detergents in hot water. After each cleaning, you need to make sure that everything is assembled correctly and there are no gas leaks.

oven cleaning

Tidying up the oven is also not an easy task. Gas models rarely have any additional options that make them easier to care for. Even the coating of the inner chamber is just enamel, on which dirt adheres well and is poorly washed. At best, the gas oven has a catalytic cleaning function.

Electric stoves do not smoke. Therefore, contamination on them appears with inaccurate use. Glass ceramics can be easily washed, they are even and smooth. The controls are hidden under the surface, there are no protruding parts on the plate (rarely there is a decorative edge). To make it easier for housewives to take care of electric ovens, manufacturers have come up with many self-cleaning mechanisms: hydrolytic, pyrolytic (contaminants burn out at 500 degrees) and catalytic.

Gas stoves as additional ones can have the following functions:

  • gas control;
  • electric ignition;
  • clocks and timers;
  • security blocking.

The gas oven can also have gas control, automatic ignition and a safety lock. Telescopic guides and a gas grill add comfort. Some advanced models there is convection. But these are expensive ovens, since convection is not good friends with gas control and it is difficult to implement them in one device.

Even the simplest electric stoves and ovens have more options than gas ones. Simply because in this case they are easier to implement. An inexpensive stove has power controls, safety interlocks, timers, and often an electric grill.

In more expensive models of stoves there are functions:

  • security control;
  • residual heat indicators;
  • operating mode indicators;
  • sensors for the presence of dishes on the burner;
  • program control of the cooking process, automatic shutdown (or alarm) at a given time.

Ovens can be multifunctional and work not only in oven mode, but also as a microwave oven, and also have combined cooking modes (e.g. microwaves+grill). Manufacturers complete their stoves as much as possible: convection function, skewer, upper, lower grill, food probe – this is currently the normal equipment of an oven of medium and luxury class.

Important! Each feature adds convenience when working with a stove and several thousand in its price. It is better to determine for yourself in advance: which functions will really be used, and for which it makes no sense to overpay.

Calculation of the cost of operating an electric and gas stove

Gas consumption can be calculated by knowing the size of the burners and the frequency of their use. According to GOST, the power of burners is divided into:

  • low – 0.6 kW;
  • normal – 1.7 kW;
  • high – 2.6 kW.

Traditionally, on the stove, 1 large and small burner and 2 medium burners. Approximately 7 kW comes out in the amount. A burner with a power of 10 kW consumes 1 cubic meter of gas. As a result, the maximum consumption of the stove is 0.7 cubic meters per hour. Knowing how often and how many burners are used, you can understand how much it comes out in terms of money.

gas stove burners

The electric stove consumes energy not only for direct cooking, but also for auxiliary operations.. The standard regulates the following parameters:

  • ignition – 1 W / hour;
  • grill heating element – 1.5 kW / h;
  • the upper and lower heating elements of the oven – 0.8 and 1 kW / h, respectively;
  • burners – from 1 to 2 kW / h;
  • lighting and indication – 15-25 W / h;
  • spit motor – 6 W / h.

It turns out that on average 1.5 kW / h is consumed per burner, and 3-4 kW per oven. All together gives such high power that not every home network can withstand.

Advice! It is recommended to cook at the same time on a maximum of 2 burners (so that the total load does not exceed 3-4 kW).

This is interesting: the power of electric and induction cookers.

Combined options

Combined stove

Choosing a specific option, you will need to put up with the inevitable disadvantages inherent in both types of devices. But today, many manufacturers, taking into account the needs of their customers, have begun to produce combined models. There are a huge number of variations, for example, in one appliance there can be a gas hob, and the oven is powered by electricity. Models are also not uncommon when there are three gas burners on the hob and one electric burner. Now everyone can choose their own unique option.

In conclusion, I would like to note that the choice of an assistant in your kitchen should be dictated not only by personal preferences and appearance, but also by the possibility of connecting this type of appliance in a particular house.
